If you’ve heard about the many potential CBD oil benefits, you may be thinking about trying it for yourself. But taking CBD (cannabidiol) isn’t always as simple as, well… taking CBD. Ingesting the right dosage is crucial to making sure that CBD works for you and that it produces the effects you’re looking for. To make things more difficult, your ideal dosage can depend on several different factors. Here’s what you need to know.

Finding Your Ideal CBD Oil Dosage

Finding your ideal dosage is mostly a trial-and-error process. You will inevitably need to experiment a little bit in order to find a dosage that is just right for you and your situation. However, being mindful of certain factors can help to point you in the right direction. The concentration of your product, the effects you wish to experience, your body weight, and the quality of your CBD product can all affect the dosage you need to take.

The concentration of your CBD product is the first thing you need to consider. The more cannabidiol per milliliter or milligram that your product contains, the less of it you will need to consume. So for example, if your CBD oil is super strong, you may only need to take 0.5 ml of it. But if it only contains half as much cannabidiol, you may need to take 1 ml in order to feel the same CBD oil benefits. Take a close look at your product’s label to get an idea of just how much of it you should ingest.

CBD is known to produce different effects at different dosages so it’s important to also consider what exactly you’re looking for from your cannabidiol.

For example, while the Mayo Clinic suggests only 20 mg for discomfort, they suggest between 200–300 mg for epilepsy. Additionally, A 1977 study found that mice dosed with 20 mg of CBD displayed more stimulated behavior, while those dosed with 40 mg seemed to be more sedated. This finding has been supported by much anecdotal evidence from people who find that dosages of under 10 mg can be more stimulating, while those over 25 tend to make them feel more relaxed.

Body Weight

How much you weigh will also affect how much cannabidiol you will need to take. Heavier people tend to require more CBD in order to feel the same effects as lighter people. This means that if you’re on the heavier side, you may require a larger dosage in order to feel the effects that you’re looking for.

The quality of your CBD oil or edible can also affect your dosage. Low-quality products made by untrustworthy brands can sometimes contain less cannabidiol than stated on the label. This can make it much harder to nail down a perfect dosage. That’s why it’s important to only buy the best CBD products possible from a producer and distributor you can trust. That way you can be sure that the product’s labeling is accurate and that you’re actually ingesting the right dosage.

At Papa & Barkley, we share the COAs for all of our products so you can see exactly what’s in them and find the perfect product for your goals.

Don’t settle for a lower-quality product just because it’s cheaper (it usually is), take some time to do your research and find the best CBD products for you.

Experimenting With CBD Dosages

If your doctor or caregiver hasn’t provided you with a recommended dosage, it’s going to take some experimentation in order to find one that gives you the CBD oil benefits that you’re looking for.

The best way to do this is to start low and go slow. If you find that 10 or 15 mg isn’t producing the effects you want it to, then move your dosage up slowly by at most 5 mg at a time. However, if you’re trying to treat a serious condition like epilepsy with CBD, you may need a much larger dosage, and it’s best to speak with your doctor or another health care professional about how much you should take.

Just remember, while the side effects of cannabidiol tend to generally be rare and mild (headache, nausea, diarrhea), they are more likely to happen at larger dosages, especially if your body is not yet accustomed to dealing with CBD. The other thing to keep in mind is that taking too much can also be wasteful. Ideally, you want to find the lowest dosage possible that lets you experience the effects you’re seeking. Anything more is just a waste of valuable cannabidiol.
